Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Dysfunction
Chiropractors are trained to correct problems due to poor joint mechanics and joint misalignments. Chiropractic treatment of the TMJ focuses on joint mobilizations, adjustments and soft tissue techniques applied directly to the TMJ and its surrounding musculature. In most cases, TMJ dysfunction is influenced or exacerbated by poor joint mechanics, and tight musculature in the upper back and neck. Therefore, of equal importance, Chiropractic care also focuses on corrections to the mechanics and positioning of the joints in the upper back and neck to relieve symptoms associated with TMJ joint dysfunction.
When these treatments are employed, motion of your upper back, neck and jaw joints can improve and your symptoms such as: ear pain, jaw locking, headaches, and neck pain can be reduced or eliminated.
What is a chiropractic adjustment?
An adjustment is a highly-skilled and precise movement, usually applied by hand to the vertebrae of the spine or other joints of the body which improves function and helps restore proper movement.
Do I need a referral from my doctor to see a chiropractor?
Chiropractors are primary health care providers so you do not need a referral to see one.
What are the benefits of a chiropractic treatment?
A chiropractic treatment can reduce pain, improve functional ability, better sports performance, fewer
hospital visits, give you better posture and spinal flexibility and is a natural pain relief.
Can I see a chiropractor if I am pregnant?
Yes, a chiropractor can help you maintain a healthier pregnancy by helping with insomnia and symptoms of nausea; reducing the time of labour and delivery; relieve muscle, joint pain and inflammation and prevent a potential caesarean section, breach, and posterior positions.
What should I expect on my first visit?
Your first visit—initial assessment—will be an hour long appointment. We will ask that you fill out an intake form, highlighting your injury and our chiropractor will take a detailed medical and accident history. An adjustment will be performed and you will be given an exercise program to do at home between visits.
